Cortisol often gets a bad rap – but not enough people talk about how essential it actually is for life. And even fewer talk about how it interacts with dopamine.
Think of it like this: cortisol is the gas pedal, dopamine is the steering wheel. As long as they work together, the ride is smooth.
Cortisol literally gets us out of bed in the morning. It also regulates blood pressure, blood sugar, inflammation – all crucial markers for health and vitality.
Without cortisol, we barely function. You feel exhausted, foggy, unmotivated, mentally drained. Even the smallest things feel overwhelming.
Here’s the kicker: chronic high cortisol leads to low cortisol.
Being "high" on cortisol can feel great – you're productive, ticking off tasks, riding dopamine hits. Until you crash into a wall.
Aside from being mindful and actively slowing down for mental and physical recovery, most people overlook something critical:
Diet and movement.
Salt is essential for cortisol to work – but nobody talks about that. Low salt = more stress.
You also want to avoid blood sugar spikes. Prioritize protein (especially red meat), healthy fats, magnesium, and vitamin C.
Try a 20-minute walk in the morning. Drink water with a pinch of salt before your first coffee. Scroll less. Take a cold shower. All of it matters.
And dopamine? It’s tied to meaning, direction, drive – not instant rewards. Most of us know that by now, right?
Without dopamine, the body doesn’t even know to hit the gas. Personally, I think this will be the bigger challenge over time – as life gets more and more comfortable.
And comfort... is sneaky.
The good news? It doesn’t take as long as you think to turn things around. You’re always just one good night’s sleep away from feeling reset.
Hopefully, by now, most people know what it takes to actually get good sleep?
