ANCIENT THERAPY ASHWAGANDHA

Ashwagandha — What It Does, What the Research Shows, and How to Find a Product Worth Taking

You've probably heard about ashwagandha. Maybe for stress, sleep or holding it together when life gets busy. But with hundreds of products on the market — capsules, gummies, powders, KSM-66, whole root — it is genuinely hard to know what you are actually getting. Our capsules contain 100% organic whole root powder standardised to 5% withanolides, third-party tested by Eurofins. Here's what that means and why it matters.

What Is Ashwagandha?

One thing upfront: we do not think supplements fix a life out of balance. Sleep, movement, food, time outside — that is the foundation. Ashwagandha is a complement to that life, not a shortcut around it.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a plant used in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 3,000 years. It is classified as an adaptogen — a category of plants and fungi traditionally used to support the body's ability to handle stress. The root is the part used, and it contains a group of active compounds called withanolides — steroidal lactones that are the primary focus of modern research.

It is one of the most clinically studied natural supplements in the world. That does not mean it works for everyone or that every product on the market is worth taking. It means there is a real evidence base to engage with honestly.

What Does Ashwagandha Do?

Stress and Cortisol

This is the most studied and best-evidenced application. One of the most cited trials (Chandrasekhar et al., 2012) followed 64 adults with chronic stress over 60 days. The ashwagandha group showed significant reductions in stress scores and cortisol levels compared to placebo.

The mechanism involves the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) — the system that governs the body's stress response. Ashwagandha appears to reduce dysregulation of this system under chronic stress, which is why the effect feels more like balance being restored than stimulation being added.

Sleep Quality

A randomised, double-blind trial (Langade et al., 2019) on 60 participants found that ashwagandha supplementation improved sleep quality, reduced time to fall asleep and improved morning alertness compared to placebo. The proposed mechanism involves a compound called triethylene glycol, which may have sleep-inducing properties.

Ashwagandha Benefits for Women

Women are increasingly the primary audience for ashwagandha, and for good reasons. The cortisol-regulating and sleep-supporting effects apply equally to women. Additionally, research has investigated ashwagandha's effects on female sexual function and reproductive hormones — a 2015 study found significant improvements in sexual function scores in women taking ashwagandha versus placebo.

The stress-modulating properties are particularly relevant given the disproportionate burden of chronic stress and sleep disruption that research consistently shows in women.

Ashwagandha Benefits for Men

For men, the most searched application is testosterone. Does ashwagandha increase testosterone? Some studies suggest yes — indirectly, through cortisol reduction. Chronically elevated cortisol suppresses testosterone through the HPG axis. By reducing cortisol, ashwagandha may create conditions more favourable for healthy testosterone levels.

A study (Wankhede et al., 2015) on men in resistance training found greater improvements in muscle strength and recovery in the ashwagandha group. A separate study reported significant increases in testosterone and sperm quality in infertile men taking ashwagandha.

The effect on testosterone is real but moderate and indirect — ashwagandha is not a testosterone booster in the conventional sense.

Does Ashwagandha Work? An Honest Answer

Yes, for what it is actually studied for — primarily stress, cortisol regulation, sleep quality and recovery. The evidence base is more robust than most supplements in this space.

It does not work like a stimulant. You will not feel an acute effect in an hour. The research showing measurable results uses 8–12 weeks of daily supplementation. Consistency matters more than dose.

It also works better when your baseline stress and cortisol are genuinely elevated. If you are sleeping well, exercising regularly and not chronically stressed, the effect will likely be more subtle.

Ashwagandha KSM-66 — and Why We Chose Whole Root Instead

KSM-66 is a well-known patented ashwagandha extract with a strong clinical record — it is a good option and many studies reference it specifically. We use whole root powder standardised to 5% withanolides because it is closer to how ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic tradition — using the complete root rather than an isolated extract fraction.

An honest caveat: most large clinical studies use KSM-66 or similar concentrated extracts, not whole root powder. The clinical trail on exactly our formulation is less extensive. We choose whole root for philosophical and traditional reasons, not because we claim it outperforms patented extracts.

Ashwagandha Side Effects — What to Know

Ashwagandha is well tolerated by most adults at recommended doses. The safety profile across clinical studies is good. Reported side effects are rare and typically mild:

  • Mild digestive discomfort or nausea — usually temporary, reduced by taking with food
  • Drowsiness at higher doses — particularly if taken in the morning
  • Loose stools at doses above 2 g per day

Ashwagandha side effects for women: No specific additional risks for women beyond those above. The one exception is pregnancy — ashwagandha should not be used during pregnancy due to insufficient safety data and some evidence of uterine-stimulating effects.

Ashwagandha side effects for men: Similarly no specific additional risks at recommended doses.

Who should avoid it:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • People with thyroid conditions or taking thyroid medication — ashwagandha can affect thyroid hormone levels
  • People with autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc.) — without medical guidance
  • Anyone taking sedative medications — additive sedative effects are possible

Ashwagandha vs. Gummies — What's the Difference?

Ashwagandha gummies have become popular (3,200 monthly searches). They work and suit people who dislike swallowing capsules. The trade-off: gummies typically contain lower doses to keep the product palatable, added sugars and flavourings, and often less transparency about the withanolide content.

Our capsules contain 650 mg whole root powder per capsule with a verified 5% withanolide content — no added sugars or flavourings.

Ingredients and Quality

Per capsule: 650 mg organic ashwagandha root powder (Withania somnifera), standardised to 5% withanolides. Capsule: cassava starch (vegetable, vegan). Nothing else.

Certified organic raw material. Third-party tested by Eurofins for heavy metals, pesticides, microbiological load and withanolide content.

Dosage — Best Time to Take Ashwagandha

Daily dose: 1–2 capsules (650–1,300 mg), ideally with food to reduce any digestive sensitivity.

When to take ashwagandha:

  • For sleep and recovery: evening, 30–60 minutes before bed
  • For stress management and energy during the day: morning with breakfast
  • Both work — pick the timing that fits your routine and stick with it

How long does ashwagandha take to work? Most clinical studies showing clear results run 8–12 weeks. Many people notice something within 2–4 weeks — often described as sleeping slightly better or feeling less reactive to stress. The effect builds gradually rather than arriving all at once.

Consistency matters more than timing or exact dose.

Pair With Other Adaptogens

Ashwagandha + Lion's Mane: Stress management and recovery paired with cognitive support. Ashwagandha addresses cortisol; Lion's Mane supports NGF and focus.

Ashwagandha + Shilajit: Ashwagandha for stress balance; Shilajit for energy and cellular mineral support via fulvic acid.

Ashwagandha + Tongkat Ali: A popular combination. Tongkat ali supports hormonal balance and energy via the HPG axis; ashwagandha addresses cortisol via the HPA axis. Complementary, not redundant.

Ancient Therapy favicon logo

Unlike many brands that use leaves and stems, we use only organic whole root, reflecting traditional Ayurvedic practice and a more complete natural profile.

Ancient Therapy favicon logo

Regelbunden konsumtion under flera veckor rekommenderas starkt.

Ancient Therapy favicon logo
Kan jag ta ashwagandha varje dag?

Ja.

Ancient Therapy favicon logo

Ancient Therapy favicon logo
Är ashwagandha vegan?

Ja. Produkten innehåller enbart 100% ekologiskt ashwagandha-rotpulver utan djurbaserade tillsatser.

Ancient Therapy favicon logo

Ancient Therapy favicon logo
Är er ashwagandha tredjepartstestad?

Ja.

Ancient Therapy favicon logo
